The myelocyte is characterized by:

  • The nucleus has small dense spots of chromatin and contains no nucleoli
  • The cytoplasm is lighter and with different types of grains (azurophilic and "specific" grains)
  • The azurophilic grains contain myeloperoxidase, acid phosphatase and hydrolytic enzymes.
  • The specific grains which are the mostabundant contain alkaline phosphatase and lysozyme.
