If a small bell is ringing in the back of your mind, reminding you that this section looks familiar, that’s an excellent sign. We’re starting with a brief review of the esophageal (esophagus) wall and its layers.

Try to identify areas with muscle tissue, glandular tissue, epithelial tissue, and especially the regions containing connective tissue.

The area we will focus on in the next sections of the esophagus is the connective tissue region located between the innermost layer of smooth muscle (lamina muscularis mucosae) and the epithelium. This connective tissue layer is called the lamina propria.
