The renal medulla lies deeper within the kidney. It contains renal pyramids, which are triangular-shaped structures that play a role in the concentration of urine. Within the renal pyramids, you can find collecting ducts and loops of Henle. The renal pyramids empty into the renal calyx, which collects urine.
