All the axons that conduct nerve impulses inwards towards the spinal cord have their cell bodies in the spinal ganglia, that is outside the central nervous system. The spinal ganglion cells have a short spur that divides into two branches, both of which are axons. The peripheral branch comes from the spinal nerve while the central branch enters the spinal cord through the dorsal root. In the dorsal root, only sensory fibers enter the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. The sensory nerve fibers can be directly connected to motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, but as a rule the connection takes place through interneurons located in the gray matter.
