Functionally, while the adult thymus does continue to contribute to immune responses, its capacity to generate new T-cells declines, meaning that the reliance on peripheral expansion of T-cell populations increases with age. This involution is a key factor in the age-associated decline in immune function, which can lead to reduced immune responses and a greater susceptibility to infections and autoimmune diseases in older individuals.
