There are severeal anatomical difference in structure between bronchioles and a bronchi:

Bronchololes (not seen in this image):

  • Bronchioles lack cartilage and glands in the submucosa, but instead have a well-developed layer of continuous smooth muscle in the wall (circular fibers).
  • The epithelium is a single-layered cylindrical epithelium with scattered ciliated cells and cells that lack cilia (club cells).

Bronchus (as seen here):

  • Bronchi contain cartilage in the wall and plenty of seromucous glands in the submucosa, smooth muscle. The type of cartilage we find in the bronchus is hyaline cartilage.
  • Like the trachea, the bronchi are lined by a pseudostratified columnar epithelium with cilia towards the lumen.
