Here you can see the caverns in more detail, filled with red blood cells. The caverns are covered with endothelium on the luminal side. They are engorged with blood during erection, due to arterial dilatation and relaxation of the smooth muscle bundles among the the caverns. Some bundles of smooth muscle cells are cut longitudinally, other are cross-sectioned.
