Here the skin and outer layers of the penis are shown in more detail. The purple layer most peripherally is the epidermis (keratinized, stratified squamous epithelium). The red strands seen in the right half of the picture, are smooth muscle layers belonging to the tunica Dartos. A group of sebaceous glands is seen in the lamina propria, between the smooth muscles and the epidermis.
