Ovary (6 year-old) (12.5X)
This image shows an overview of the human ovary from a 6 year old girl. A cystic structure is visible, but has no clinical significance (it may be a rest from an atretic follicle; a few follicles develop to the secondary stage even in prepubertal girls). A part of the fallopian tube is also visible. The somewhat porous appearance of the cortex is due to numerous primordial follicles.
