The epithelium appears as a "beehive pattern" (400X)
Why does the cylindrical epithelium appear with a "beehive pattern" in parts of this preparation?
The answer is that the columnar epithelium in the gallbladder has abundant apical cytoplasm, and when the cells are cut at an angle, such as in invaginations of the surface, where the epithelium covers a small pit, the cells can be cut so that the cell nucleus is not included in the incision. Then the epithelium appears with a "beehive pattern".
