Apex of tongue (40X)

Microimage
Image copyright: Mathias Nordvi, ARR. (Tissue stain: H+E).

This section is showing the apex of the tongue of a monkey. The dorsal surface (the back of the tongue) is the purple colored epithelium at the top of the image. The tongue is covered in stratified squamous epithelium of which the lower side of the tongue is smooth while the dorsal surface has numerous protuberances which makes it rough looking. These protuberances are the papillae of the tongue (lat: papilla filiformis).
